Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

La Nueva has some of the best enchiladas ever! I never leave on an empty stomache! They have the best tortilla soup as well. If you're craving Mexican food stop by and give them a try!

WOW!!! Even if you are remotely close make sure you stop by. This is our first time here (And it won't be our last) since we are driving back to California and found this hole in the wall on Yelp. Everything was great from their food, decor, and service. Our waitress brought out small samples of their chile and it helped in the decision process. Just keep in mind that they are only open till 3 so get there early and enjoy some great home cooked food!!!
(5)Becky B.
This restaurant is straightforward good food well-prepared and served right. We came looking for good authentic Mexican food and we're not disappointed. La Casita is just that-converted from a typical little house-sparkling clean, even the bathrooms. We had Tacos Estrellos, seasoned, shredded pork and beef tacos, and Enchilada Plate, this one with shredded chicken-a New Mexican traditional stacked enchilada. Service was great. House salsa is just the right heat. And you have to save room for the empanadas-we got our cherry and apple pie turnovers for the road!! I don't know if we can ever get back to Las Cruces, NM, but if we do, we will most definitely seek this place out again.
(5)Angie C.
the best new mexican breakfast in las cruces. Can you say red or green? I want some of their green chile right now!
(5)Holly K.
On our first visit to New Mexico and I despaired of ever finding "real" Mexican food. But this is IT. I asked about several items on the menu - and the waitress not only explained each, but brought us samples. This is a place where they are obviously proud of what they serve. We tried menudos (tripe/hominy soup) which was a little too spicy for me but my husband loved it. Finally settled on the chicken flautas, three crispy rolled tacos with pretty ribbons of red sauce, guacamole and sour cream. Sides included drunken beans (whole beans in delicious sauce) and calabazitas (mixture of squash, corn, onion in a rich, tasty sauce). They also have fideos (kind of like spicy spaghetti). There was not one morsel left on our plates. The price is VERY reasonable, we paid under $20 for two. Funny end note: on the way out I saw a young mother feeding her baby menudo, the item I found too spicy! Guess it takes all types :-)

First off, I am a native of southern Mexico and this restaurant is reminiscent of that cuisine, second while we are in the South West and green chile, and enchiladas are king this place is not for those. The food here is fantastic exactly the fare that they serve back home for me in Mexico City. The tacos are killer, the chimichanga is amazing and if i could make a meal out of just the sides with the fideos and calabazitas I would! Don't go in here thinking its a New Mexican food place and order the standard green enchildas or chile con queso, go and get your self the beef chimichanga with a side of fideos and calabazas, forget the rice and beans and you are never gonna look back on all that old "Mexican" food you use to have. BELIEVE THAT!
(5)Sam B.
The food was very tasty! I really liked the salsa. I got the star tacos and they were delish and my fiancé got the chimichanga bandera and enjoyed it very much! Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She made the whole meal a very pleasant experience!

As soon as you enter you are properly greeted by all the staff making you feel at home. They sit you down and start you with a tin bucket of fried tortilla chips (first for me) and some awesome thick salsa that the chip can stand up by itself. Salsa The right spicyness for me. Overall, great service, great New Mexico food capturing the flavors of the Southwest. PS A shout out to our waitress Yoly.
(5)Darren K.
We are not from here and noticed this rest. had a high rating. I can see why. The food was so good and our server, Yvonne was very helpful to suggest sides and she was very friendly. Great place to visit.
(5)Chris W.
Very good food, nice spice and cerainly gives you a New Mexico experience. That being said, NO Beer/Alcohol is sold or served (disappointing) small dining are and you can get packed in tight with other tables, but the food made it enjoyable for sure.
(4)Sara C.
Stopped here for lunch on our road trip from San Diego to Houston. Was slightly disappointed after all of the glowing reviews. Service is very friendly, but the food is just so so. I agree with one reviewer about the overly salted beans. The enchilada was decent but chile relleno and chicken taco left much to be desired. Not sure how this place compares to the alternatives in Las Cruces, but not sure it's worth the drive into town.
(3)Jina K.
Quaint, rustic ambience with an authentic feel of old Mexico. Humble cheese enchiladas covered in New Mexico red chile and onion did not disappoint. Super friendly staff all around. Highly recommend.
(5)Daniel C.
This place is pretty good. My dad and I stopped in at night time. I had a chimichanga with red and green sauce smothered with refried beans and rice. My dad had the enchiladas with the rice and refried beans as well. It's a small place but really good food at a great price and the service was ok. I would definitely give it a try.
(5)Amber R.
Great food and service. The Tacos Estrellas were delicious but if they have Pozole Verde as a special I highly recommend it..what amazing flavor. They also give you a big bucket of chips and the salsa is really good as well with a slight smoky flavor.
(5)Craig P.
Your average 'sloppy' Mexican food. At first I found the food to be tasty and then I realized that it was due to the tons of salt in their food. Overall it is not good nor bad just average.
(3)Ltray R.
This place is fine. They have Tex-Mex food not authentic Mexican but it has a real good taste. The place is small and cozy. Waiters are friend and very proactive.
(4)Joshua R.
Food was relatively good. Really no complaints. I ordered the steak sirloin cooked medium and it was very much well done. That was my only complaint. Our waitress, Yogi, was fantastic! She made the whole restaurant experience wonderful. She has a great personality, and she made my family feel like we were the only ones in the restaurant. If I could give her a five star alone I would.
(4)Michelle P.
Great, friendly service. The food was authentic and tasty with large portions. Would definitely go again.
(5)J.R. C.
Great street tacos (they call them "tacos estrellas"). Love the seasoning on the pork and the refritos cooked with chorizo. Complimentary bucket of chips and salsa. What more could a local snob want from one of L.C.'s whole in the wall establishments? Get some.
(4)Heidi H.
We stopped here after our visit to white sands that blew us away. Tricky to get to in our rv but ample parking in back for our 27ft rig. Great service and food.
(4)Jeanne S.
Chose this place for our first dinner in Las Cruces and I don't think we could have made a better choice! I had the huevos rancheros with green chile sauce and I was in heaven from the first bite. My partner enjoyed the tacos estrellas, and by the look of his plate when he finished, he had no complaints either! We were too full and too tired after a long day of traveling to order dessert, but we promised to return before we left town to try the sopapillas! Attentive service, casual atmosphere, very friendly, and amazing food!
(5)Jack E.
We tried this restaurant new to us this morning for brunch. To be able to cautiously judge the selections, we ordered huevos rancheros. The wait person was exquisite. She oriented us to the restaurant, explained the offerings and options, and served us as if we were her only table, which we definitely were not. The food arrived quickly and we devoured it just as quickly. we will return.
(5)F. S.
Really good food, very friendly server. Family owned. Beef/pork tacos very good, if a little dry. Chili rellenos excellent. Rice and beans very good too, plus the of less common sides, fideo (good) and calabacitas (not tried). Great salsa, good chips. Will go back.
(4)Misty M.
We had visited for lunch on June 6th and loved it! So on our way back to Az on June 17th. we went for breakfast!!! We had the Huevos Compuestas. Which was crispy corn tortilla on the bottom green chili topped with an egg and cheese with a side of Buracho beans. Oh my it definitely did not disappoint. It was great!!! If your stomach is not in the mood for a little spice opt for the American fare bacon eggs toast and hash browns ( my hubby this morning). It was prepared as he requested he liked it! There food is very good! The staff is friendly and helpful!! Definitely worth the stop!!! Dave & Misty Muse :)))
(5)Orlando R.
Everything about this place was awesome. Awesome food service and place was clean. If I end up going threw Las cruces again I definitely will stop there.
(5)Reynaldo G.
Great find!!! Had the chile relleno omelette... Had great flavor and good portion.. Only critique was the chile was under cooked
(4)Allie H.
Came with my brother and boyfriend and we loved it. Food was delicious and came out in a timely manner. Service was friendly and went above and beyond for our table. Will be back!
(4)Don W.
We needed a New Mexican food fix for our 1st night from Texas. Found this on Yelp, tried it an loved it! Looked like it has been there for years and seemed to be mostly locals eating here. Green Chili enchiladas were just what the doctor ordered and the Chile Rellenos my wife had were delicious! The salsa is excellent! Can't wait to stop here again!
(5)Steve D.
Driving through Las Cruces and found this place. The food was fantastic! One of the best Mexican places I've been to.
(5)George C.
Great food! Hot salsa!!! Friendly help. Always on our list when we are in Las Cruces
(4)Crystal M.
Like my husband just said: "Was there a down side, other than we had to pay for it?" My answer: No downsides! I would gladly pay top dollar for the meal we had! ... Didn't have to as our bill was only $18 and we were full to gills! We got the same thing: The enchilada plate "christmas style" which meant with red AND green chile! It was delicious, but what really impressed me was the refried beans. I'm very picky when it comes to beans as they were a household staple growing up. These were just like Mama's! A definite little jewel in Las Cruces eatery!
(5)Brian O.
Another good Mexican restaurant in the Las Cruces area. The salsa and chips were very good and the main course was also very good. Service was excellent and friendly. We will return again soon.
(4)Jinky B.
A friend and I were traveling cross country and wanted to try some authentic Mexican food. Looked at other reviews on Yelp and decided on La Nueva Casita Cafe. The staff was great and the food was fantastic. I ordered the enchiladas with the green sauce. Inside seating was limited, but contributed to the more intimate/personable feel of the restaurant. If you are passing through Las Cruces, give it a try.
(4)Linda S.
My husband and I were traveling through Las Cruces on our way to the east coast and I used Trip Advisor for a recommendation. I thought the food was excellent and the service could not get any better. I had the 3 enchiladas (beef) with green sauce and my husband had the tacos.
(5)David f.
First thing you should know is that there is no beer, and no wine. This despite the information on Yelp, which is the first time Yelp has let me down. This is a small, family run place that kills you with kindness. Although the chips and salsa were pretty good, the chicken enchiladas (green chile with egg) was nothing to write home about, much less write to Yelp about. My mom's chimichanga required strength and leverage to get through the tortilla. Service was nice, and I may be back since the family that owns it has not had a lot of time to build. Plus, maybe they'll have beer....
(2)Emily S.
Love it here! Food is fabulous, atmosphere is fun and the staff is great!! Found our new place!
(5)Edgar V.
After looking through several reviews on TripAdvisor/Yelp, etc. we decided to take the family to dinner at La Nueva Casita. There were 8 of us, so we called to make reservations as the restaurant is not very large (probably 50 people max) - The host who answered the phone was very friendly and took my reservation easily. When we arrived, they showed us to our table which was marked "reserved" - The table already had a couple of buckets of chips with some salsa; test #1 = PASSED the salsa was delicious! Very garlic-heavy, which I like, and a nice spicy kick after a couple of minutes. So far so good. We looked over the menu's and as other reviewers have stated, there are not a TON of options, but enough variety that anyone can find something to be satisfied with. I chose the chimichanga, several others chose the taco plate, 1 person ordered the special of the day (Chicken Mesilla if I remember correctly) and I believe some enchiladas were ordered too. Our server was very attentive and came to refill glasses more than once while we waited for our food. All the food came out at roughly the same time which is nice. It smelled great and everything was still hot from the oven. Test #2 = PASSED. So, how did the food taste? It was INCREDIBLE! My chimichanga was loaded with very tender, moist shredded chicken that had really good flavor. I got the boracho beans and calabacitas on the side and both were amazing. hands down the best calabacitas I've ever had - an opinion shared by the whole table. Every other meal received similar reviews. The tacos were crispy without being overly greasy. The enchiladas were creamy and the egg on top was cooked to perfection. The rice was flavorful, light and airy. Test #3 = PASSED. At the end of the meal, I asked if they sold their salsa to go and bought a 16oz. container of it. Now, one would expect to pay close to $100 or more for dinner for 8 with sides and drinks, but when the check came, it was only $78! Wow! Test #4 = PASSED. I was so impressed, that I came back with a friend a couple of days later and ordered the taco plate myself. We had the same server who was equally amazing as the our previous visit, and the food was just as good for lunch as it was for dinner. If I had to pick one thing to complain about, it would be the guacamole. It's very runny, and just not very flavorful in my opinion. So let's recap: - reservations for large groups - great chips/salsa - great service - great food - great price If you live in the area, and have not been here, do yourself a favor and go soon. You will not be disappointed.
(5)Kitty S.
We came for a late lunch. The service is great. They keep your tea full. The Chimichanga was amazing the salsa is pretty hot. The Green enchiladas could be a bit better.
(4)Jenna L.
We've eaten here a few times. The service has always been good. I really like the grilled chicken salad. The chicken is a little sweet and smoky. The mexican food is similar to all the other little mom and pop restaurants in town.

BOTTOM LINE: There seems to be pride in the place on Facebook. But at the restaurant there is an appalling lack of pride in either place or food!! Save yourself a trip there are too many delicious restaurants in town to go back to this one. FOOD: too greasy and salty & the beans are likely canned SERVICE: Indifferent towards customers and cleanliness REVIEW: I was very excited to try this place after reviewing Yelp and following them on Facebook. We walked in about 1pm and the friendly waitress said to sit anywhere. Looking around though all 5 empty tables were still dirty. They cleaned one off and wiped about 2/3 of the table surface off for us. There was old food debris left in the table's seams and the rustic tables and chairs felt rickety. Looking around the dining room I noticed 2 of the four ceiling fan / light fixtures had dead bulbs. And one of the light fixtures was dangling below the fan, gently swaying in the fans motion. Although the condition of the dining room showed lack of pride in place, maybe the food really is good... ? The chips and salsa were very good. The salsa tastes mostly of garlic and is not hot. We also got the queso, which is cheddar and thickened quickly leaving a thick unappetizing scum on the surface. My friend asked the young waiter about the special. The waiter replied, 'yes we have a special.' We never could get a description of the special. So, we ordered the mystery special and Liche's Combo plate. The waiter did not offer a choice of beans as the menu states. Later my friend asked for more tea and the waiter filled his class and ignored my empty one. Our food arrived and the crunchy chicken taco on the combo plate was delicious! Unfortunately delicious ended there. The green sauce was very salty making the rolled enchilada underneath it not very good. The chile relleno was bland. The beans were dry and crusty and it is highly likely they were canned. (yuck, I can do that at home and buy a better quality can!) The rice was oddly greasy and very salty. The pork and green chiles were very greasy. My friend said his 'special' the pork soft tacos were not seasoned, just bland. He was also unimpressed by the crusty beans and the greasy-salty rice. I guess they don't have dessert. I could check their menu. The waiter simply brought out the check without asking if we wanted anything else. Only half their tables had customers, so they weren't very busy, yet they left many of the tables uncleared and or cleared of dishes but with a dirty surface. No pride & too much salt. I'm still thirsty.

Driving with my Big Brother from So. Cal to Houston, we made a pit stop in Las Cruces for both types of fuel. The restaurant looks like a hole in the wall, so our first impression was positive. Second impression was positive as 3 employees greeted us warmly as we entered the front door. Third impression was awesome---our server, Yolanda who is a true gem. She told us the restaurant has been in business since 1957, and she's been doing a superb job there for 9 years (we're certain of that). Fourth impression, the litmus test for a good Mexican restaurant, the chips and salsa---some of the best we've ever had ANYWHERE. We both ordered the carne asada burritos, banados---perfectly grilled meat with an outstanding homemade sauce. We're from an area where Mexican food can be outstanding, and this place is OUTSTANDING---from the ambiance (which is escuela vieja) to the service to the food. Do yourself a favor and stop here if you're weary from pounding the 10FWY---we're confident you will not regret it!

Came for breakfast. Best Mexican food I've had in 9 years of living in the Southwest. Chile relleno omelette & the machaca were perfect. The salsa they serve with the chips is perfection. The staff is friendly and conscientious. Eating here was like being back in my Nana's kitchen. Next time we are in Las Cruces, we will be coming back!
(5)Kathy D.
Meh. Was disappointed in some of our food after reading rave reviews on Yelp. Chips and salsa and our wait person (young man) were the best part of our meal. My husband ordered the red enchiladas. They were way too spicy for him-guess we should have asked. He also didn't care for the taste of the sauce. I ordered the three corn tacos with pork and beef. The meat was tasty but a bit dry-should it have come with green chile sauce? The rice and refried beans were average. We had to wait a bit longer than expected for our meal as well. Our server was good about filling water glasses and giving us seconds on chips. The restaurant seemed to be in a neighborhood with houses nearby-perhaps that's why they didn't have a liquor license.
(2)Charlou M.
Stranded in Las Cruces due to a car breakdown, this restaurant came up in yelp as being one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. It is true. I had the best enchiladas of my life. And they were open on New Year's Day. Delicious.
(5)Kevin H.
Traveling to Las Cruces and Hatch, New Mexico is a bucket list item that should be on every chile lover's list. This year I checked the box by flying from Indiana to New Mexico for the 43rd Annual World Chile Festival in Hatch. Which leads me to the best meal I've had since I got down here... I'm sitting at La Nueva Casita in Las Cruces and I just devoured a chicken burrito, smothered green. Awesome. Accompanying my burrito was the highlight of my day - the calabacitas. It is ridiculous!!!! My new favorite place in the city of Las Cruces. By the way - visit Ty next door at Beck's for a great after dinner coffee and dessert.
(5)Ellie O.
Delicious and huge portion. I got Licha's combo which came with several sides and is easily enough for 2 meals, all for under $10. They were super quick and really friendly. The Borracho beans, rice, chili con carne that come with the meal were as good as the chili relleno and enchilada. I definitely recommend for anyone stopping through and looking for a quick restaurant off the beaten path.
(5)Bill H.
This has been our go-to Mex restaurant in Cruces for about three years now. Love the Fideos, flautas and other items are good, too. Love playing the jukebox which always gets at least $2 from us. You have to adjust the volume control. Unfortunately people like to sit in front of it and they're not playing it. Too bad there are not speakers with adjustable volume located around the room! I highly recommend this place. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip.
(5)Noah K.
Such a cute place! Stopped by here on our way back from White Sands. Great food, great neighborhood, and great service.
(5)John W.
Maybe the busiest little place on right across from a nice park. The entry way is difficult to navigate but once I got inside I was promptly greeted and got to choose my own seat. Not a lot of seating, but enough to be busy. Retro and throw back decorations are on the walls. The menu is simple and easy to figure out what you want. Was served chips & salsa with our drinks. 3 Enchiladas with red sauce and and egg is a tasty treat. Large portions and good quality. Prompt refills and friendly staff. Worth stopping by if you're in the area.

La Nueva Casita Cafe is one of the better Mexican food restaurants in Las Cruces. Service is very friendly, and much of the menu is good if not great. Highlights: Calabacitas - creamy and buttery. Absolutely love this "side" substitution. Tacos Estrellas - strange combination of pork and beef, but it really works. Tostadas compuestas - breakfast version with an over easy egg is delicious! Choco flan - dessert made in-house and totally worth cramming into your already stuffed belly. Your belly will beg for mercy. Don't give in. Chips and salsa - truly some of the best in town. The chips are so crispy and perfect. Needs work: The refried beans - quite bland. Just a little salt would go a long way. Chile con queso - it's different every time I try it. Sometimes very good, other times not so much. This is a very unpretentious, homespun neighborhood joint. The food is fairly inexpensive and better than that of many other restaurants in the "affordable mexican eats" category. Also, the jukebox has some pretty solid jams, which is a nice touch. La Nueva Casita is definitely worth trying.

best mexican in mesilla valley
(5)Nick R.
Good food, affordable price, and a quaint location make for a nice place to grab a bite. Also the wait staff is very friendly and accommodating (they threw some jalapeños on the grill for me last time). Their salsa also has a nice flavor and kick. Their "Tacos Estrella" are delicious, especially with the aforementioned grilled jalapeños!
(4)Lisa F.
I'm embarrassed to even check in. Forced to go here because my mother was hungry for Mexican and a beer with tomato juice. Nice service. But so sad to say that everything is prepackaged and hum drum. I'm sad that so many restaurants are going this way. Seems like all of the meats, cheeses - all ingredients from the same place. Costco maybe? It all tastes the same and it's often not fresh. Big package of prepackaged chips sitting on top of soda syrup boxes. Why allow customers to see that mess? Why can't restaurants take time to fry their chips in house, like in the good old days (just a few years ago)? Yucky. Queso dip was only as tasty a a movie theater snack. Came from a nacho cheese can. Sad. I just feel so sad about how an owner would allow this and call it Mexican food. It has the same shape as Mexican food. Smells kind of like it too. I'm so attached to the real and fresh food we get out and about. This is not it. Its just a bunch of ultra processed food. No booze. The worst part was was when my mom"s cheese enchilada arrived it was just a rolled corn tortilla sitting there on a tiny plate. Nothing more save a sprig of cilantro and maybe some grated lettuce. There was not a drop of enchilada sauce. Is that the way they intentionally prepare enchiladas? Could it have been forgotten? I have never heard of an enchilada without enchilada sauce. Thanks the whole point, is it not? Like when you order a chimi or burrito and you want it enchilada style. Like the sauce that COMES on a an everyday enchilada. Weird. Weird. Weird. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/… Theistic was country, from a flat screen monitor. Not good. Some regular customers were enjoying hamburgers with fries. Maybe they know not to try with the Mex food. Other yelpers that give this joint more than 1 star must be from the midwest - not familiar with southwest food. What the heck?!? We have yet to find tasty Mexican food in Las Crusas. Still searching. Anyone?

My boss turned me on to this place, and it has become a favorite destination for me and my wife. Excellent quality Mexican food at VERY affordable prices. The salsa is a bit hot but has good flavor. I'm working my way through parts of the menu and I'm definitely fixating on the Tacos Estrella, a mix of shredded beef and pork that is very nicely spiced. Their chimichangas come tri-color with guacamole, sour cream, and tomato sauces decorating it like the Mexican flag. They also offer sopapillas and honey for dessert, I can also recommend them. One thing that is a bit different is they offer fidejos in addition to the standard rice and beans. It's sort of a Mexican noodle soup, peppery, a little oily with just a little bite. Very nice. It's very casual, and the only negative that I can give it is they have a television in the dining area. I don't like having a TV on while I'm eating, but perhaps that's just me. One thing that you might find unusual is that they don't bring you a check, just walk up to the register by the front door and they'll ring you up. Pay attention to the sign on the counter: either leave a cash tip or tell them to add it to your credit card. The restaurant itself has been there for over 40 years under a variety of owners. The current owner is an experienced hotel chef and has an excellent handle on her menu. A heartily-recommended dining experience if you like good, flavorful Mexican food.
